This is in many ways an homage to my teenage self. I have been into the occult in some way or another since teens. Sometimes its been cosmetic, sometimes it’s been casting ritual magick. In “Satanas” I brought together together my interest in the dark arts, Lovecraft, and Poe. Also, I used to be a low-budget goth.
Teen angst aside, this was made during a period of experimentation, of how I wanted to compose my images, of what I wanted to have my subject matter say, and of material usage. Between this painting and "The Transcendental Object", I embraced using collage, photobashing, and mixed as a techniques for composition. While the images themselves are generally drawn on, they are composed with collage sensibilities, and often feature appliques directly.
